Tell me about Korean Christmas!
I'm hoping that any Korean members will respond to this. Tell me, please, all about the culture and traditions of Christmas in Korea.
How is it celebrated? What are the do's and don'ts? Do you have Santa Clause? I want to learn all about the traditions of my soon-to-be home for three years! |

I do hope a Korean Christian member may respond to you about any Christmas traditions that they may know of first hand.
In the meantime, may I recommend an excerpt from Wikipedia for a brief primer? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_in_Korea A story of the beginnings of Christianity in this country. I also recommend the historical writings of Protestant Rev. Bishop Richard Rhutt, who lived here many years. As you will read, there are many so called "Christians" in Korea. As in the rest of the world, their actions may differ greatly from their profession of a belief. Don't expect to see a Christmas celebration in Korea to any great extent anywhere in Korea, other than in some churches, and on American Military Posts and Bases. Christmas in the U.S. may be the most celebrated holiday. In Korea, the greatest holiday is Chusok. It is a 3 day celebration, when Koreans remember and honor their deceased relatives, and, sort of like our Thanksgiving tradition, they travel to their ancestral home to celebrate with their family, placing food and gifts on the graves of relatives. It is celebrated on the 14th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. In 2008, it will fall on Sept 14th. Wikipedia calls it Chuseok, using the new Romanized spelling, (which does nothing for pronounciation.) Ancestor worship and spirit worship dominated Korea for many years. Animism predates most all beliefs in Korea. |

Re: Tell me about Korean Christmas!
As you know I am Korean.
Christmas, There is no a special meaning to the employees. Just is a day of rest. To lovers, The day is special because they can takce pleasure into Carol song and X-mas trees of downtwon. To Christian and Catholics, The day is a day of blessing. And also the poor people. Becuse they can get a lof of foods from Church. X-mas of Korea, only there is for young people. They are drink until late at night in downtwon and also fight each other and shout in the street. A great God will judge them someday. Our X-mas, only their celebration. I am not sure though what this has to do with the topic of how Koreans celebrate Christmas. Obviously you are not in touch with how the majority of Korean Christians(30% of the population) celebrate Christmas. |
