The format war is over... Blu-ray wins!

I stopped paying attention to this, but saw a post on a different forum about this. Blu-ray is the clear winner here..... Netflix, Wal-Mart and Warner Pictures ALL went blu-ray exclusive in the last few weeks. Toshiba even said a few days ago that they are all but stopping the HD-DVD line of products.

So I guess if you buy HD-DVD now the terrorists win.

Okay, now this may be a really stupid question, but since the format war seems to have been settled...

Will the movies that have been released to date exclusively in HD-DVD format be re-released in Blu-ray?

Dee :)

Re: The format war is over... Blu-ray wins!

The problem I have is that you have to have ALL the equipment to go with that Blue Ray player to REALLY experience Blue Ray....

Blue Ray Player $250 - $600
Full HD TV $1500 - ?

And who knows what else to really experience FULL BLUE RAY....

Not to mention, the Blue Ray movies are $25 or so....

I guess you REALLY REALLY REALLY RERALLY have to be into movies to get all that equipment.

I did buy a Plasma TV last year but that was less than $1400, I'll never buy blue ray technoligy

Our boys wanted a PS3 for Christmas, so we sort of got the blu-ray player through a roundabout way, and our present to ourselves with Income tax was a 46" LCD 1081i Hi Def tv, which we got a great deal on at Best Buy. The only other expense we had for the hookup was a HDMI cable ( ours ran around 50 bucks or so, they -can- cost up to 100).

Was the investment worth it? YES YES YES! Now, we are admittedly movie and video game junkies, but the change in quality is unbelievable. The bluray picture and sound is -awesome-, and even the hd tv channels are higher quality than your average.

I wouldn't go back. :) LOL.. I just.. hate the thought of trying to find all my favorite movies in Bluray. :)

Love ya, bro!
D.

I agree Dee.... The difference between just the HDMI cable and standard RCA cables makes the difference

Also for the people who do not have HDMI when you are hooking up your DVD player be sure to get the RCA cables (not the RCA standard red, white and Yello cables) Be sure to get the Blue, red and green RCA CABLES..That made a huge difference..

Yes those cables have names I just cannot remember them...

Love ya also D...

Component Cables.

Saying you will never buy bluray technology is like someone 20 years ago saying they would never buy CDs. Eventually the trend in gaming/movies will shift to bluray(high definition) and you won't have a choice.

To Dee.........keep an "old" tv, an "old" dvd and vhs player, and some old cleaning solution/tapes around. It'll be worth it. I'm all for the technology and am glad bluray has the top ground. You can't beat the be quality...that is till you start to play your oldies

You must be around 20ish in age....

Blue Ray is not a feature that is embeded into a TV it is something extra that you can ADD on to your current system if you want to. If you don't want it, who cares...I'll never buy it...

Just something else that is cool to say you have.

Re: The format war is over... Blu-ray wins!

The answer to your question about HD-DVD movies being re-released in blu-ray is complicated. Some of those were contractually exclusive to HD-DVD so they would need to be released from that in order to re-release the movie in blu-ray. I am sure that in time it will happen, but I would not expect it too soon.

You are right, bluray is not an embedded tv feature. It actually has nothing to do with the tv at all. Bluray is called so because the laser that is used to burn/read the discs is blue(violet), compared to the red ray laser traditionally used with cd/dvd. The smaller wavelength allows for more storage per disc. This means blu-ray has the capacity to store HD content, not possible with existing red ray dvd burners. Blu-ray is the future format of all dvds. Since only blu-ray has the storage capacity to hold HD movies/tv show content, everything will eventually move to that standard. It is still a trend for early adopters, but as network tv and the film industry move toward HD as a standard, it will also become a standard. The US Government has actually mandated that all broadcast tv stations switch to digital by Feb 17, 2009. Read about it here http://www.dtv.gov/ You will need a HDTV, or a special converter box hooked to your analog screen just to watch broadcast tv. You will either adopt the HD (blu-ray) standard, or you won't be watching anything.
