16,912 murders, 92,837 rapes in America last year

Well, the “land of the free” had another violent year in 2005. There were 16,912 murders and 92,837 rapes. If you know anything about rape, you know it is one of the most unreported crimes. From what I understand only 1 out of 3-4 rapes is reported. That is 254 reported rapes a day! I would say it is closer to 750-1,000. That is simply amazing and scary.

Here is the only good news.

Despite the national numbers, Detroit, Los Angeles and New York were among several large cities that saw the number of murders drop.

Somewhere I imagine that a few will blame porn like they did in the late 80's. I attended some seminar once where the speaker, who completed some study/book stated that if the total crimes committed in the US were to exclude the SE US, we'd have a much lower crime rate. Rape is definately under reported and not taken seriously by some officials. Wm Kennedy Smith and Mike Tyson made the news regarding rape 15 years ago or so. I believe that if Tyson went to trial first, Smith would of been found guilty. My senior year in college some baseball player was accused of raping a freshman. They basically looked for inconsistancies in her story and dismissed the allegations. Which was complete BS The dude could get by with about anything. From what I remembered there were even had witnesses, never interviewed them of coarse. She should of called the cops and let them deal with it. Truly sad.

I think these stats show the need for hand guns.

Idiots like Michael Moore will show movies on how guns are the reason behind Columbine and other deaths. That is true, but making guns illegal will not keep guns out of the hands of criminals. People will get guns if they are legal or not. If you make guns completely illegal, you simply take guns away from people that need them to protect themselves and leave them in the hands of criminals.

When I read statistics like these, It makes me consider getting a concealed gun permit.

Never trust a college or university to look after the victim's interests regarding rape allegations. The college's chief concern is it's own reputation. They will try to quietly resolve the matter, primarily by quieting the victim. I'm not sure if the court system is much better. Rapists who video tape the crime aren't even found guilty.

True in this case. Sad that the school was associated with a major denomination.

Let's put that to the test. From a 2003 report on murder per Capita... I'll list the top and bottom states (I'll exclude DC and Puerto Rico, but they are at the top):

Murders per 100,000

1. Louisiana 13.00
2. Maryland 9.5
3. Mississipi 9.3
4. Nevada 8.8
5. Arizona 7.9
6. Georgia 7.6
7. South Carolina 7.2
8. Illinois 7.1
10. Tennesse 6.8
10. California 6.8

50. Maine 1.2
49. South Dakota 1.3
48. New Hampshire 1.4
47. Iowa 1.6
46. Hawaii 1.7
45. Idaho 1.8
44. North Dakota 1.9
43. Oregon 1.9
42. Massachusetts 2.2
41. Vermont 2.3
41. Rhode Island 2.3

Nope, didn't think so.

Since it was some speaker said and it was the total numbers of crimes in the US, not just per capital murder. What was your point again?

Murder is not the only crime when measuring 'crime rates'. Tell me that you don't believe that it is.
