Re: Should everyone be required to take an HIV test?

How are you going to know if someone knows they have AIDS/HIV? What about those people (prostitutes and druggies included) who go to these free clinics and give a fake name? The medications are expensive, so how many homeless, drug addicts or prostitutes do you figure are going to be carrying several bottles of pills around?

What if someone was in an alterd state of consciousness at (like a person under the influence of drugs) the time when they were diagnosed and they didn't remember and never sought care? There are to many "what if"s I think it would be very hard to prove that someone actually knew in a lot of cases.

Or it just might mean the person won't get treatment at all.

Not true. When someone commits murder they are arrested in most cases and put in jail. It is immediate in most cases (within hours or days). They can not commit murder again unless it is in prison or when they get out. In the case of AIDS, a beautiful women could sleep with THOUSANDS of men over a short period and take years to get caught. If this beautiful women had a mark a huge percentage of the thousands of men would pass on this girl.
Exactly Mike, and you're solution doesn't change anything. Either you're for marking anyone with AIDs or you're for marking criminals with AIDs. If you're marking anyone with AIDs then yes, you could prevent some people from being killed by the AID's killer. However, if you're only marking criminals, then you wouldn't save any more people by marking the AIDs killer. Why, because if you could find the person guilty for willfully infecting others, attempted murder, then that person could just as easily be sent to prison like any other murderer. They can still infect hundreds of people before getting caught.

You should give the average Joe some credit. They are not going to say, "No tattoo means no AIDS" and have sex and/or share a needle. I am saying when they see a tattoo they have a choice to make. If a guy is visiting a prostitute and sees the tattoo, there is a good chance he will pass on the girl. The same goes with a drug users unless they are extremely in need of a fix.
If you're searching for a tattoo, you've already modified your behavior based upon the tattoos existence. You're using it as a method to determine if the person is clean or not. If the person is tattoo free, it's much more likely for a person to take part in high risk activities.

Quote:
What I am saying is THOUSANDS of AIDS and other diseases could be prevented. Over a few years THOUSANDS of prostitutes and drug users will be marked. Then there will be thousands of people visiting prostitues and people using drugs with a choice when they see the tattoo. If they don't see a tattoo it doesn't mean the person is AIDS free, it simply means they have not been identified with AIDS.

Drug users and prostitutes are groups with a high rate of AIDS and the ones that spread a large amount of community diseases. If they are arrested they should be marked. I am NOT for the average citizen being marked, but for criminals who break the law and know they have AIDS, but go out and share needles and sleep with others anyway.
Is it for prostitutes only or for anyone who's deemed promiscious? Would a guilty John be marked? What about a "loose" woman? Or a gay man? How do you determine if someone should be marked or not? How many warnings do they get? Or is it only for specific crimes?

Also, what about other ways to prevent AIDs that you'd support? Are you for needle exchange programs? Are you for giving free condoms in schools? In prisons? Are you for free tattoos in prison to reduce illicit tattooing? Are you for giving free condoms to prostitutes at home an abroad? Are you for the US cracking down on sex tourism abroad? Are you for free testing and treatment of those with AIDs. Are you for mandatory circumcision, because it reduces HIV transfer from women to men?

Re: Should everyone be required to take an HIV test?

I am going to have to say it is a bad idea. The initial goodness of the idea would be turned wrong eventually. In other words: Eventually it would be a mark that could be used to exclude people from social circles. They would become outcasts even after a cure had been created. It would be the same as sending everyone that is HIV positive to an island. What would be next, having them register like sex offenders?

I am going to have to side with the lesson that was learned during WWII. No markings for generalizations, or any other type of categorization that could lead to unhealthy stereotypes.

Wow, First I have to say wow.

Second, as a Jew I a offended. Tattoos? WTF!? What would you do for the Jews who had HIV? Give them Tattoo? Did you know that Jews are not allowed to have Tattoos. If a Jew gets a Tattoo they can not be buried in a Jewish Cemetery. Chew on that one for awhile.

Are you serious? What does Jewish and this have anything to do with the conversation? It was brought up for debate, not me bashing Jews. If a person is Jewish and a prostitute on the street or a repeat drug user, then tough luck. Stopping the spread of AIDS is bigger than a drug user or prostitutes right to spread AIDS regardless of religion.

If a Jew is a prostitute or a junky he/she has bigger problems than where he/she will buried. If that person also has been warned that they have AIDS and decide to share needles and continue to be a prostitute then I could care less about their religious rights. It is called attempted homicide in many states when you knowingly spread AIDS.

I am all for religious freedom and you can look at my posts in the lounge about the Lebanon/Israel conflict and you will see I am probably the biggest supporter of Israel on this board. The difference is I can separate religious freedom from the better of society.

Maybe a tattoo is not the answer, but I have yet to see the complainers bring up a better idea.
