It is official, married people are now out numbered by non-married people.

Married couples, whose numbers have been declining for decades as a proportion of American households, have finally slipped into a minority, according to an analysis of new census figures by The New York Times.

The American Community Survey, released recently by the Census Bureau, found that 49.7 percent, or 55.2 million, of the nation’s 111.1 million households in 2005 were made up of married couples — with and without children — just shy of a majority and down from more than 52 percent five years earlier.

I would say this can be attributed to women in the work place. Women seem to be waiting to have children until after their career's take off. I guess that is a good thing as people get married at a later age and probably are less likely to get a divorce.

The days of housewife as a career-barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen are no longer fashionable in America. Gone the way of the 10 Commandments and honor among Congressmen and Senators.

Women who put career ahead of family is no doubt one reason for the marriage decline. I think the other main reason is that we have made it so easy to get a divorce and a divorce can be financially devastating for the party who ends up paying, which is still most often the man. As financially hard as a marriage itself is, I believe a lot of young men today view divorce as a probability and too great a financial risk. Some states have implemented new marriage 'covenant' laws that make it hard to get a divorce if you were married under the covenant law. Its kind of like bringing the religous aspect of marriage into the written law of the state.
