Microsoft to Digitize 100,000 Books

First Google and now Microsoft. Looks like Microsoft learned from the Google's initial mis-step.

Quote:
A plan by search engine Google — a rival to Microsoft's MSN search engine — to upload its own digital library has been dogged by complaints from publishers that their copyrights are being infringed.

Mindful of that controversy, Microsoft and the British Library stressed that they will be choosing books only from the older end of the library's vast collection of 13 million titles, as these have long fallen out of copyright.
Looks like Microsoft is not making this exclusive either.

Quote:
Despite the fierce rivalry between the two digital companies, the library says its deal with Microsoft is not exclusive — the scanned books will be posted on the British Library's own Web site, currently freely searchable through Google.

Digital book battle widens

Yahoo and Amazon are also entering the online print realm. I think Amazon has the right idea:

Quote:
Amazon.com became the latest Internet giant to jump into the fight to bring novels, biographies and textbooks online, announcing two new programs Thursday that allow the retailer to sell books that can be read on the Web.

One will allow users to buy online access to any page or chapter of a book. Another will give users access to entire books online as long as they also buy the traditional, paper version.

Hey Aly, I just love your avatar!

I think you are correct. Since Amazon sells books, it is smart for them to enter this market or be left behind, and probably hurt by free books (since books is such a huge part of their revenue).
