A good host?
I registered three domains through mydomain.com, their hosting plan bites. So I opened up with godaddy.com because they're cheap... plus they have commercials during the superbowl ^ ^.
Besides setting up your own server... what other good hosts are there?

What are you trying to do? If you are just running a small website I can point you to an excellent company for as little as $2.50 a month on a shared plan. If you need a dedicated server then that is different and you are talking about $80+ a month. You can run up to 300 websites on a dedicated server. I am running USFK Forums, USFK Classifieds and about 8 other sites on my dedicated server.

I'm opening a website that targets a video game genre. I already have an existing audience and plan on getting revenue through free traffic and some affiliate programs. This specific type of genre has good potential to grow to an enormous level by the end of year.

There's also an ongoing argument I run into as far as Windows servers and Linux servers. I heard Linux has better performance, but I wouldnt be able to use alot of codes that makes the Windows server appealing.

I was surprised to see that Linux was more used than Windows. It seems that most people write their off-the-shelf software to run on Linux servers. Also, since Windows charges for their software, you have to pay more for a server running off of Windows. When I was shopping around for my dedicated server, there was a $25 charge to use Windows over Linux. I know very few people who do not run Linux as their server software.
In the long run, you are better off using Linux. Once you choose a software for your server to run on, it is very difficult and costly to switch. Let's say after a year you wanted to go to Linux, you would have to download your entire site, pay your server company either to reload the software or provide you a new server, then upload your site. As you know it can be a pain to do all this!

I would highly recommend hostpc.com. I use them for 6 different website and I have never had an issue. It is a small company, but the owner really does care and it shows.... no I am not the owner... :-)
