Thanks Senor Joe! I'll keep an eye out for them. It'll be cool to see some of the ol' stomping grounds.

Scott:

I managed to get two photos in tonight. Still a problem in technique. However, if you look at your photo of 30 years ago, taken in front of the P.O. you will see the three tallest buildings on the right in your photo are still there, and a few more. I went out today to pay my phone bill at the KT building which is a block away. I saw the space ship looking building on the hill, it is still there. I'll post some more soon.

Mr. Joe--you are the man! that is just....amazing. It's really wierd to see those buildings from an area I knew so well...still standing, but now with monster buildings behind them.

There's something deeply satisfying about reconnecting a little with the place.

Any chance you got a shot looking the other way down Hangang-ro--to the southwest? here's what it looked like (also from in front of the PO) in '72:

That central building was a movie theater--occasionally I'd go w/ Korean friends to see movies there.

Can you post larger files or does the gallery require small ones?

In any event, thanks again. I appreciate that you've taken time to help out a stranger. I wish my father were still alive--he would have enjoyed seeing these pictures a lot.

My new camera is smarter than I. A Casio ex-P505, it can take stills, zoom, and can record stereo sound and videos. (I accidentally took a video by turning the wrong knob once). Between learning to use it and downloading to the computer and then into the Forum, I'm still shaky. But, yes, 30 years has made a big change here. I have a b&w photo of Seoul Station. I can get a new shot from the same spot and you will really be surprised! Just have patience, I'll get it perfected soon! (Remember, "Soon" over here is not the same length of time, necessarily, that people in the U.S. might assume!) Later
I'll try attaching to a post and see what happens. Bigger photos? Yes, we will work on it.

Got it figured out. Most photos are labeled properly. I'll answer questions later, and get some more just down to the SW where the Yongsan Station is. It is a subway and train station, and a 4 story shopping center, with an "E Mart" downstairs. E mart is like K mart to you, with a big grocery store in it's basement. Behind the station is a great Electronics Center where video gamers, and computer folks go nuts. Where Scott's latest photo shows the theatre is about the area between the two tallest builidings across the street.

You have to go to Gallery, then scroll down to Cities, then Seoul.

Thanks so much Mr. Joe. It's very cool to see glimpses of the past...and how modern everything looks now! The shops lining the street to the PO...well, I'd never recognize that. In my day that street was pretty shabby, some houses (with the broken-glass fences), a few small, dark shops, an empty lot or two, etc...the view toward the gate looks pretty much the same though.

That's really great and I look forward to more. Thanks again.

Re: Yongsan today

Just checking in. As usual, I'm always on the lookout for pictures of Yongsan. A real treat for me would be to see pictures of South Post, my old neighborhood...Collier Field, Hairy Hill (do people still call it that?), the elementary and middle schools...if anyone can get some shots of the area I would greatly appreciate it. (Assuming that it is permitted.) I lived in a house that backed up onto the perimeter wall (w/ ROK army housing behind it) about two or three blocks from Gate 19.

thanks,

Scott
