Yongsan being sliced up already?

It looks like the South Korean government is already making plans for Yongsan. The Seoul Mayor is not happy. looks like greed wins over green on this one.

Quote:
The South Korean government announced last week that it will offer part of Yongsan Garrison for development of high-rise residences and businesses, reserving only a portion for park space, according to a news release from the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.

The news prompted a reaction from Seoul’s newly elected mayor, Oh Se-hoon, who campaigned on making Yongsan Garrison into a public, green space. On Friday, he criticized the national government for overstepping its bounds and going against Seoul residents’ wishes.
This is a real sign of the move really happening.

Cool Re: Yongsan being sliced up already?

Politicians are slicing at each other, that's all. That doesn't read to me that the move is progressing faster. The feeling of those here not required to parrot the "Official Statements" are thinking 2010-2012, if the move is not eventually overcome by events. That is, the Air Force won't stay very long if the Korean Government doesn't come up with a practice range for the US Fighter Aircraft. If they don't like the sound of freedom (noise), we will move to Japan. The Army is downsizing, they just haven't figured how much or when. GI Korea covered that in reprinting the Chosun Ilbo article on this.
Will there be a really big move, or a downsized Brigade version? Eighth Army may go to Japan or Hawaii. Secretary Rumsfeld will let us know in a few months. Korea and the US may have new presidents before a decision is made on the Pyongtaek move.

The Wheels of progress move slow and it is difficult to tell if the wheels of government ever move.
