57-year-old accused of setting Yongsan Garrison fire

This story was originally posted here and here. It turns out a 57-year old woman did it!

Quote:
Local South Korean police have forwarded charges of trespassing, inflicting injury and arson against a Seoul woman to prosecutors in connection with last month's fire at Yongsan Garrison, according to police and prosecutors.

Kweon Jung-ja, 57, is being held by South Korean police in connection with the March 16 fire that burned two buildings on Yongsan and a third on an adjacent base used by the Korean Service Corps.

Earlier this month, Kweon told police she started the early-morning blaze after entering an unlocked gate on the corps?ground and using a cigarette lighter to ignite workers?gloves. Kweon, in custody since the fire, also has had a police-ordered mental evaluation.
Full story here.

The bigger question is why? Was she hurt (mentally/physically) by some GIs in here past? Did the Anti-U.S. messages in the Korean news set her off?

Looks like she admitted to starting the fire. Looks like she was mad for not getting a visa!

Quote:
A South Korean woman admitted in Seoul court Thursday that she set a March fire on a U.S. military base to publicize her fight to rejoin her family in America, according to court testimony.

Kweon Jung-ja, 57, has spent years trying to garner help to return to her U.S. husband and Korean-born sons in the States, but her one-person protests near U.S. facilities fell on deaf ears, her lawyer said. She decided to change from her self-proclaimed peaceful protests to a more violent one after a U.S. military police member in March called her crazy and a liar, her lawyer said after the court proceeding.

During her 30-minute court appearance, Kweon at times cursed and shouted her answers to the Seoul Western District Court judge, accusing authorities of kidnapping her and railing at both U.S. and South Korean governments for not helping her renew her U.S. visa.

She also accused court officials of terrorism as she admitted to arson and to trespassing on government property.

sejongeb is an unknown quantity at this point
That is a shame she couldn't get a Visa or any help from the Embassy. I guess my foolish question is why she was alone in ROK in the first place? Husband and kid stateside, I'm presuming @ some point and time she became a US citizen. Not a good way to get back to the US I'd say.
