BX/PX complex
Where is the PX complex at Yongsan? I've never been there. Is it almost the same as the one at Osan?

Re: BX/PX complex
The one in YongSan might be a little bigger, but the one in Osan is much cleaner, and if there is anything that Osan's doesn't have, then the store employees can get it quickly from YongSan. I think that they build Osan's PX to take the place of YongSan's, when everyone moves south.
Anyway, I like the one at Osan better. |

Yongsans might be bigger because the 4 seasons isn't in it.

Re: BX/PX complex
I also like the layout of the Osan PX, with the other concessions so close, it's just a walk-by in getting to the cafeteria or PX. Very will consolidated/convenient. (And I can easily get sidetracked at one of the food concessions.)
This is a little off the subject of this thread, but has anyone heard of the proposed date of the closure of YongSan Garrison, and move-down of the troops? It took some extra time in the negotiations about the land that was needed to expand Cp. Humphreys. So, I imagine that the time table had to be adjusted. |

We at Yongsan should know more concerning the move, it seems, since the Headquarters is here. But not necessarily so. We do not have any more info than you. The official word is things are going on schedule. Obviously, many things have to happen before any move. First, there has to be a place to move to!
Have you seen any sign of construction for, say, 15-20,000 additional folks to live and work at Humphreys? Including family housing, dependants, a high school, a teen center and a grade school? The hospital at Yongsan will be here for a few more years, I hear. Do you see a hospital at the Hump large enough to take care of 1/2 the number of folks expected? Until you physically see the completed infrastructure necessary to support such a large influx of people, don't hold your breath. We generally believe the plan is still on, but considering the present funding situation within the Army, would it be realistic to suspect money for a move would take precedence? Rumors are that the Korean Government may have hit a snag on funds necessary to provide fill dirt (clay) to bring the level of 3,000 years of "nightsoil" in those rice paddies up 2 Meters or so, to the level of the present Post. Without a solid base, to get the ground above the flood plain in that area, it would be a losing proposition for any contractor to build outside the fence on the back side of the Post. Any building of any size would need steel pilings driven deep. If I was a military person and wanted to live in the new Dream City, I would volunteer for Guam, stay there as long as I could, and then return. My Guess- 4 or 5 years, if Politics continue to favor troops remaining in force on the Peninsula. Those of you on two year tours can forget it. Yes, there is constuction, and some troops have moved in to new barracks, filling up some rooms to capacity. The "move" has the appearance of starting. Keep us informed of any new highways and high rise apartments! Don't take this as gospel, I am only basing this on common sense and my experience of watching Korea grow for 46 years. (I first came to Osan in 1959.) |

Re: BX/PX complex
Construction is taking place on about every available site in Cp. Humphreys. The two old hq buildings are down. Barracks are being built
as quickly as they can be. But, you are right about the back area, rice paddies. The farmers who were bought out 2 (?) years ago planted rice, and I saw them harvesting it just a few weeks ago (with the help of the police force). So, nothing has even began to take place over the fence. There have been a small amount of new apartments being built close to the camp. But, nowheres near the amount that it will take. And, I wonder what is going to happen to the Dragon Hill Lodge. Do you know if we will keep that, or will that pass to the Koreans, also? And, in what time frame? We have an oversized dispensary. Have not seen or heard of anything resembling a new hospital. Cp. Humphreys has a new, small grade school. Opened a couple of years ago. But, not big enough to handle YongSan folks. And, no new h.s. that I know of. (Perhaps the downsizing is going to happen, so there won't be the need of a 1 to 1 move. Whatever, Cp. Hump will still need a 99% facelift before it is ready. And, I do expect AnJong-ri to undergo a drastic change, too. It is completely unacceptable, still being not much more than a small town that caters to G.I.s.) Well, will be interesting. Sure wish I had had the foresight to have bought some of the surrounding lands when I was first here - 1980. The Law of Hindsight. |

The Dragon Lodge will stay! The new U.S. Embassy is planned to be built inside the North corner of Yongsan, (Camp Coiner). That is all in the plan.
I cannot give more details as I don't know more. Common sense would seem to indicate that the Embassy Housing, which is a goodly part of Yongsan, would stay. The State Department is not associated with 8th Army or the Army, and has other facilities on Yongsan. My information is that the Hospital, recently renamed a "Combat Support" hospital for some reason, is to stay until 2012. The whole peninsula is supposed to drop to 25,000 military. I don't know who will go where, but you can bet The Taegu and Pyongtaek Area is scheduled to get the most. I don't know the number of civilians, or of dependants. I do know General Bell has spoken in favor of three year tours. That makes considerable sense, monetarily speaking. I'm guessing again, that the world situation and Korean politics may have a considerable affect on the future of the U.S. military here. The dream city you see on the usfk video is a nice dream, but won't happen overnight. |
