Damdaemun/ Dongdaemun - same place or different?

I feel like I am going crazy! Are these two places the same and just spelled differently or are they two separate places? I have been to Dongdaemun twice now, and if Damdaemun is really a different place, how do I get there?

Recommend that you use the following website for planning your subway trips:

http://english.tour2korea.com/01Trip...m=m1_4&konum=4

I looked at the alphabetical stop listing and only saw Dongdaemun and Dongdaemun Stadium. There are some places that have very similar names, but I don't thing that this is one of them.

Good luck and happy adventuring.

Re: Damdaemun/ Dongdaemun - same place or different?

Hey SS! I told you to learn to read and write Korean! Keep trying.
I'll go with "dameeun" on this one. Ain't no such place. Someone is trying to write Korean in English, and spelling it by ear. That is how "Jeonra Bug Do "became an approved way to spell a Southern Province. Thankfully, the MOE gave up on that spelling. James Wade said," What does a Jeonra Bug Do?" Find his books in the library. He is/was a great writer, musician and Korean scholar. Does anyone know if James is still in Korea? Or alive?

SS- I'll get over to see you soon. See Rich L. Miller for details.

Dameeun-- the website you reccommended seems to have disappeared!
I know it did exist earlier..

Re: Damdaemun/ Dongdaemun - same place or different?

Go in the front building entrance, a part of Dongdaemun Stadium, that is for Visitor Information. The girls there speak English and more. Get handouts from spots you want to visit. There is even a room in back with an awesome layout of Seoul built on the floor! They will get on the computer and find anything for you!
Dongdaemun stadium INSIDE is not a stadium anymore. It is a SUPER Flea Market. Those $5 mini diode flashlights are $3 in there. Always bargain, sometimes walk away. An all day exercise.
Outside on the street, I got a great cold weather jacket for $5. Dig around in the pile, ask for XXX LARGEE SIZE !!
Never believe the sizes. TRY it ON. Right there- IN THE STREET!

Cool Re: Damdaemun/ Dongdaemun - same place or different?

You know, now that I stop and think, "NAM Dae Mun", spoken quickly, might sound like "Dam Dae Mun" to the non-Korean. Properly pronounced-(NAHM not Nam as in ham)

Again, Nam=South // Dong =East // So or Suh=West

Dae= Big // Mun (moon)= Gate

For the newbie, Namdaemun is the super shopping center near Seoul Station. Subway line 4 North from Yongsan goes > Samgakchi> Sook Myun Girl's University> Seoul Yuk (Station)> Hoehyeon(exit 5 is Namdaemun)>Myeongdong(more fashionable upscale shopping)> Chungmuro>Dongdaemun Stadium (best wholesale shopping in front of and inside the Stadium!) Tons of inside shopping in buildings to the north within a block or two.

When I saw this it was written not spoken, but I think I must have been extra tired that day or something!

Re: Damdaemun/ Dongdaemun - same place or different?

To answer the OP's question,

Namdaemun is the Southgate Market and Dongdaemun is the Eastgate market.
two different places.

If you can't find what your looking for in those two places then it hasn't been made yet.

Bones

Re: Damdaemun/ Dongdaemun - same place or different?

On the topic of Namdaemun and Dongdaemun markets, can anyone direct me to the Motorcycle shops? I have heard that there's a line of shops that include Harley, Honda, Suzuki and the lot.

Cheers,

Re: Damdaemun/ Dongdaemun - same place or different?

The line of motorcycle shops (about a 1-2 block strip with shops on both sides of the street) is on T'oegaerow - not too far from the Far East Engineers compound, or down the hill from the Ambassador Hotel. Chungmuro is the probably the closest subway stop. The main Harley store is near Chongaechon 9 but there is a Harley showroom on the "strip" on T'oegaerow.
