Cool Seoul "A Day Of No Vehicle" Sept 10

Seoul asks that no privately owned vehicles be driven on Monday Sept 10. Yongsan Commander, Col Hall, asks all to support our neighbors on this day.
Local and City buses will be FREE until 9 PM! Biking and walking are encouraged. Environmental theme will prevail. A parade of 1000 bicycles will be on Jongno, and many street art performances will occur.
Military Vehicles should be mission essential only off post. Government parking lots will close.
More info in the Morning Calm Paper, page 1.

wow...how rediculous...you know we had a discussion on our break time in my BNCOC class here on why we think they actually took the drivers privilages away for E-5 and E-6...not because of the dUIs and etc..it is because the generals and Cols, spouses and DoD civis were griping and moaning about not having enough parking spots...it is funny that an O-1 can have a car that is single and about 23 years old..but a married individual that is say 35 with 2 or more kids cant drive cuz he is an E-6 pretty sad on i think...sorry for the rant and hi jacking the thread but ..no drving ur POV on the 10th..LOL cmon get real...but DoD civis and KN will be able to drive

Yea, that will cause more hardship than anything. When people (GASP) have to actually walk..........

I know Mr Joe likes to walk so he will enjoy that.

Kinda like the cell phone thing.....If we took away all the personnel cell phones in our Battallion our Battallion would not work....

Cool Re: Seoul "A Day Of No Vehicle" Sept 10

Yeah, I plan to walk down the hill, maybe 1/2 mile, and ride the #3 bus (free) around to gate 20! (Chuck- I hear some new govt cell phones have GPS built in, so big brother will know if you are at work or somewhere else during duty hours!)

Parking lots on Post will be "closed" Monday. DOD Civilians and KN employees are included in the request. Some folks will be surprised when they see the barriers in their normal parking areas!
I'm sure some folks don't read the paper and won't know about the request.
I doubt it is on the radio.
Personally I believe it is a good thing to be aware of the pollution and problems caused by traffic, and I think Beijing will have to act soon. I
hear they need to use headlights in the daytime to penetrate the smog!

Parking has been a problem on Yongsan for years. So much so, that unless you park in a really stupid manner, you won't get a parking ticket on Yongsan.
Speeding and no turn signal is where the tickets are given.
I agree with 05impalaSS that parking is a major reason to limit USFK driving in Korea, in addition to ALL the reasons insurance companies charge more for under-25 drivers insurance. Statistics Prove you Suck at driving! If soldiers had their own statistics, you probably suck even more-especially overseas!

I understand the parking buildings in the new design of my future office at the Hump are supposed to help parking. My guess is-really?

The traffic Friday night on the Banpo Bridge Road in front of Gate 52 (by the Commissary), was so packed that the light ws red for 20 minutes to get off Post after the Hail and farewell at Komiskies! I finally did a U turn and went back out Gate 10 by the Dragon.
Saturday, there was a demonstration under the Bridge, and traffic was barely moving at noon. Seoul traffic is so bad that Seoul issues stickers you can put in your car window, so if you promise NOT to drive on one day a week, you get a discount at a gas station and on a car wash! But if your sticker says Monday, for instance, I hear there is a penalty if you drive on that day.
It is inevitable that a lot of work needs to be done on the Korea traffic problem. It can't be allowed to get worse. More restrictions will be seen soon.

I think it's a great idea. It's not a military only thing. It's all personal vehicles in a certain area of Seoul to help raise environmental awareness. The Morning Calm explains it better.

The stickers represent a weekday (so there are five - Monday thru Friday). I don't believe there is a penalty associated with them if you drive on the day represented by your sticker, but I do know you will not be allowed to park in gov't owned parking lots. So, for example, if you have business at the ward office and you pull up to the entrance, they will check your sticker and tell you to park elsewhere (no doubt - somewhere where you'll have to pay), if your sticker is for that day of the week.

When they are enforcing the "every 10th day rule," you will be ticketed if you are caught driving on a day of the month that matches the last number in your license plate (ex: last digit of your license plate is a 5, so you can't drive on the 5th, 15th, or 25th, unless it's a weekend). And it's not just the police you have to watch out for ~ there are civilian groups who will also be out on those days watching out for cars in violation. The civilians usually set up near intersections and catch cars while they are stopped and waiting for the light to change. USFK is not subject to this policy. But with the change over to civilian type license plates, your plate now looks like any other plate in Korea. So the civilian groups will probably flag you down if they see you driving. This has happened to me before and I was able to explain (in Korean) that I am a member of USFK, so they let me go. It might be a bit of a hassle if you don't speak any Korean. Probably have to show your USFK driver's license and/or registration.

It is just political show.
The other side were a lot traffic because of that show.

Re: Seoul "A Day Of No Vehicle" Sept 10

Sounds like a great idea to me. There have been suggestions of having one or two 'no drive' holidays in the USA when only emergency, government and mass transit vehicles would be allowed on the road. people shouldn't have a problem in planning ahead for such a holiday, if they do then they probably can't plan sh-t in their own lives anyway.
