Question on assignment to Korea (Camp Coiner)

I am reporting to Camp Coiner, Yongsan on May 2008. I'd been stationed in Camp Humpreys back in early 90s and I assume many things have changed including reporting procedures. In 90s, all Soldiers reported to Camp Coiner and then were devided into 2 groups: 8th Army (including 19th TAACOM, Taegu) and 2nd ID. Soldiers assigned to 2nd ID were shipped out the next day. My branch manager said he can put me in Camp Coiner or Camp Casey and I requested Camp Coiner; I assume Soldiers assigned to 2nd ID are heading to Camp Casey directly...correct me if I am wrong.

I just turned in Command Sponsorship request to IMCOM-Korea and I was told that they cannot work on my paperwork until 90 days prior to my reporting date to Korea - NO exception! For Soldier who PCS from another overseas location like me, 90 days (or even less due to PCS leave) is not enough to arrange relocation of my family, in case of disapproval of Command Sponsorship. Perhaps, I have to be prepared to bring my family NCS.

Any information on assignment to Korea (for Army personnel) would be much appreciated.

Ken

Cool Re: Question on assignment to Korea (Camp Coiner)

The inprocessing center is still located on Coiner, just up the street from my office. I hope you can avoid Casey. As you may know, life is more civilized in Seoul, for most people. I wish you luck, and accompanied status is in favor under the present regime here. We live pretty well, still a step up from the Hump, but they will have a first class post there if construction and money hold out. General Bell is shooting for family life being available all over Korea.
Welcome to the Forum! See you in May.

Do people get stationed at Coiner? I thought that was just the standard place that they put on most soldiers orders. When you get here you go to Stanley and then they tell you were you'll go.

Most everyone who comes to Korea, there orders say CP Coiner. That is the first place you go (Army) then you get shuffled out to your units from Stanley.

Re: Question on assignment to Korea (Camp Coiner)

Mr. Joe, Nearlywild, and Chucksnee w/nice Avatar,

Thanks for all your reply. Camp Coiner is where 1st Replacement Centre is located (my former Soldier, now E6, is working there to be in charge of helping Soldiers who are going to 2ID units). I have seen some Soldiers' PCS order to Korea showed Camp Casey 2nd ID Replacement Company/Centre as reporting place instead of Camp Coiner.

The reason why I chose Camp Coiner as my reporting location instead of Camp Casey is that way I can have more chance to be assigned to Yongsan or down South where I can have my family live with me regardless of Command Sponsorship approval.

Mr. Joe, I have known GEN Bell since he was the Commander of Army in Europe and USANATO before he moved to Korea. He made many positive changes for Soldiers in Europe while he was here. I hope he did/does same there as well.

BTW, are both Camp Stanley and Casey located in TDC (TongDuChon)?

Camps Stanley and Jackson and USAG Red Cloud are all in Uijongbu, about 30 minutes closer to Seoul than Casey.
