Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

My command sponsorship/family travel just got approved and my entire family will travel to Korea on May. I am granted concurrent travel to a 2 bedroom government quarter located at Hannam Village even though I am assigned to 2nd ID. My questions are:

1. Does anyone know that there's Soldier who commute from Hannam Village to 2nd ID location daily? Can they make my dependents live in Hannam Village and make me stay in BEQ at 2nd ID location?

2. Is there 2nd ID liaison office located in Yongsan? That could be my possible pinpoint assignment.

3. We are allowed to ship 1/4 weight allowances to Korea, approximately 4,000 lbs. One of my friends who recently been stationed in Korea told me that we are not allowed to take any bulky furniture since government provides most of them. Is that true? I still need to take some of our furniture including sofa, bed and my son's furniture (crib, changing table, etc.).

I know there are not many members here who work in 2nd ID but any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

I PCSed to 2ID from the States and was command sponsored before I left for Korea and traveled with my family, so I am very familiar with this situation.

You're not allowed to go home during the week. Typically, you stay in 2ID land all week in a BEQ and are allowed to come home on Friday after COB. Most people return on Sunday evening to avoid Monday morning rush hour hassles.

2. Is there a 2nd ID liaison office located in Yongsan? That could be my possible pinpoint assignment.

There is such an office. It's manned by 3-4 NCOs from 2ID. It's highly unlikely that this would be your assignment, as none of those positions are command sponsored.

3. We are allowed to ship 1/4 weight allowances to Korea, approximately 4,000 lbs. I had the same thing - 1/4 JTR. But I still shipped a lot of furniture. The movers showed up and they tried to tell me I couldn't ship it to Korea. They were so used to people PCSing to Korea only taking a small pile of stuff, that they came unprepared - and didn't want to have to go back and get extra wrapping material and an extra crate or two. Which they ended up having to do. You might want to give them a heads up before they come and pick up your stuff.

I know there are not many members here who work in 2nd ID but any help would be much appreciated.

We are also 2ID and we are pinpionted at K16 (aka Seoul AB)...we're not CS, but since there is no family gov't housing at this location any CS would also be at Hannam. I know MOST of 2ID is in Area 1 and live as Willy detailed, but since it didn't sound like you knew where you were pinpointed, wanted to throw out there that there are a few 2ID here, just south of Seoul.

Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

Thank both of you, willy and alrm, for your info. Most likely, sometime next week I will find out about my pinpoint assignment within 2nd ID. Meanwhile, I explained to my wife about our future living condition in Korea (weekend couple). In the beginning, it was hard for her to understand why the Army makes us live separately in Korea after they allowed us to move to Korea together. She becomes understandable since I can see her and my 2 months old son on weekend *at least*.

Willy, I have questions for you (or anyone who knows):

1. We are authorized to ship one POV to Korea. Since no 2nd ID Soldiers are allowed to operate POV (regardless of rank), do we have to keep our truck in Seoul with my wife all the time? Or can I keep it outside gate of 2nd ID base and use it on weekends for the tranportation to Seoul?

2. Do you know the condition of Senior Enlisted quarters in 2nd ID units (mainly CRC or Camp Casey)? I heard about the gorgeous Sr. Enlisted BEQ in Camp Humphreys but I don't think 2nd ID can match that.

3. I heard about the (possible) partial removal of curfew in USFK. Do you think it affects 2nd ID as well?

Thanks a lot.

Girl20racer,

If they let me keep my POV at 2nd ID base, I guess your husband and I can do carpooling .

Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

LOL - I've heard its much better to ride the trains/subways..etc. I'll have the GTI with me..

We're going through a lot of the same things right now.. his report date is March 1st.. I'm trying to learn as much as I go along. Are you going to be at Camp Casey?

Have your wife contact me somehow.. IM: tbap07 or through here and I'll try to help her out as much as possible.. with housing websites, maps..etc. This forum has been help as well.. (With me contacting members via PM's.. ) my threads normally don't get much response.

In some ways it's kind of silly...much of the leadership in 2ID treat the whole "I can't go home during the week" as some sort of badge of honor. I even knew staff officers who didn't go home on weekends - but had their families come and visit them in Uijongbu or TDC. They felt they were so mission critical that they simply couldn't do it. The funny thing was...the CG went home just about every weekend.

Actually, some 2ID soldiers are authorized to have POVs in Area 1. I believe it's CSMs and Bn Cdr and above. But most of them don't bring them up there because they have families in Yongsan who need them. But my Bn CSM had one - she was single and had no family in Korea.

Having said all that...it's kind of a grey area. 2ID basically has had a tradition of really being a hardship tour, and it seems like a lot of people want to keep the tradition going for no other reason than because "it's always been that way."
I'm sure there is a policy letter that says "No POVs allowed." But if USFK (2ID's higher) authorized you to bring a POV to Korea, how can 2ID say you can't drive it? That's like the Bn Cdr telling you can't do something after the Bde Cdr said you could do it. Way back when - no one had POVs in Area 1. But now all the contractors have them, so there are POVs all over the place. So a soldier driving a POV doesn't stand out at all.

I occasionally brought my POV up to 2ID land and never had any problem at all. I had to move from one base to another one time - so I used my POV to do it. If I knew I had a lot of meetings to go to at another base, I'd bring my POV. My boss was always more than happy with this arrangement because we could ride in comfort instead of having to go through the hassle of arranging for a Hummer, a driver, etc.

Pretty much everything is new and by almost any standard, quite nice.

Going back to that long standing tradition of 2ID being a hardship tour...

2ID has always done things separately from the rest of Korea, so I doubt that a change in curfew in Area 2 (Seoul) will have any effect on 2ID's curfew policy.

Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

Thanks a lot Willy for your detailed info. That's what I heard about 2ID more than a decade ago and it hasn't changed at all. At least I know how it is even before I start working there.

Girl20racer, at this point I only know that I am going to one of units in 1st HBCT. So it could be either Camp Casey or Camp Hovey. I just found MyungJin bus schedule from Yongsan to CRC/Camp Casey at http://www.angelfire.com/ks/Yongsan/bus.html (even though it looks quite old). It looks much comfortable to take that bus to Yongsan then let my wife pick me up from bus terminal at Main post. My wife said *hi* and you will meet her at commissary in Hannam village soon .
