Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

Hello, my name is danny,
I spent 2 years at Casey before here (Y.S.) If you tell me what your rank is and what your MOS is, I could tell you where you will be assigned within 1HBCT ( because I was in a battalion within 1HBCT) and type of quarters you will be living in. If you are SFC to MSG; single room with bathroom is most likely. Camp Casey is going through a storm of construction re-modeling buildings almost every senior quarters I can think of.

POV,you register your vehicle at yongsan and you can obtain driver's license at yongsan. Up at Camp Casey, I drove for good 1 month before coming down so as far as driving goes, it is upto the commander.

In my opinion, if you are command sponsored, I say bring your wife and kids to TDC and find an apartment (actually, a new city which is about 10 min driving distance from Camp casey is got great quality apts available.) One reason being that they will be close to you. Your wife can obtain license and drive around (I am sure you can too). Subway station opened up last SEP. so it takes only about 1 hr to 1 1/2 hrs to get to seoul.
Last, I am not sure if you've been at Seould but air quality is poor. Though quality of life is above Camp Casey area.
I say only problem that you would face by doing so is your kid's education. Seould American School is at YS post at Seoul.

If you go to CRC, quality of life is better than Casey but little (just a bit) lower than Seoul. and it is only within 30 min from seoul. They also provide great quality apts. As far as on post housing at CRC, I don't know but its got to be better than Casey.

If anything else about 2ID, please let me know and WELCOME TO KOREA!!

Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

Thanks Danny for your kind reply. (my son's name is also Daniel :)

A couple of days ago I talked to folks at my gaining unit and I found out that I will be stationed in CRC, 2nd ID HQ. So based on your reply, quality of my life will be between YS and Casey :)

I am an E-7 and I wish I can have my own room at CRC. It has been 13 years since I had a roommate. As far as housing concern, I don't know if I will have an option to move my family to Uijongbu because my Command Sponsorship approval letter stated my family will reside in Yongsan. I contacted Yongsan housing office but I was told that they cannot make any decision (on post vs. off-post) until I report to Korea.

BTW my son is only 10 weeks old so I don't need to worry about his schooling yet.

If you are command sponsored, you have to get an exception to policy for your family to live in Area 1. I don't think it's difficult to get, but you can't just do it on your own. One thing for sure, the only free option for school is to send your kids down to Yongsan everyday. The military will not pick up the tab for one of the private schools in Area 1.

Technically speaking, you can reach northern Seoul (DoBong-gu) from CRC in 30 minutes. But northern Seoul is not where most people are going when they come down to Seoul - they are going to Yongsan. Under the very best of conditions, you cannot reach Yongsan from CRC in 30 minutes. I drove that route for years, and the best I ever did was 33 minutes. Anything under one hour is doing good. During rush hour - expect much longer transit times. The subway takes at least an hour - probably closer to 90 minutes. Of course, you have to factor in walking times from/to the station also.

Okay, if request for exception to policy for moving my family to Area 1 (Uijongbu) gets approved, can I come home to stay with my family every night without maintaining BEQ at CRC? Is operating POV part of exception to policy as well?

In one of the emails from our contacts in korea, they had said that could be an option.. if that were true, then yes he could live with his family. However I know that you can hear one thing and the other applies to you.. so who knows.. I would love it if that was possible for my family and yours.

Good luck.

Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

Oh yeah, and could someone tell me which village/town/etc.. is closest to Uijongbu out of the following?

Sorry man, didn't mean to hijack your thread, I'm just curious because I'm trying to figure out where a lot of these are

I know someone who was command sponsored in 2ID and had an exception to policy to have his family live in Uijongbu. I'm pretty sure he still had a room on base - just in case there was a lockdown. But I don't think he ever used it and lived at home with his family.

And he did have his POV with him.

Re: Working at 2ID and residing in Hannam Village?

Uijongbu is still on the subway line, but it is about an hour's ride from Seoul station to Uijongbu station. I would personally position your housing as close to a subway stop as humanly possible, it will make life much easier! Huam Dong is a good spot, but pretty far from the subway because it is so close to Namsam Mountain.

I think out of those areas I would pick Ichon... but I would need to refer to a map before telling you for sure!

Was there any special needs or requirements for him to get that? Was it his rank/MOS.. ?
