Trying to remember Yongsan
During the early 80s I was stationed at Yongsan. Someone I know is in Seoul now and I was trying to tell them how to find where I lived. I downloaded Google Earth and everything looks so different. I lived in Yongsan dong. I would go out what I called the back gate closest to Iteawan and follow the wall but veered to the left and down the hill and up. I lived on the right half way up a hill. But the view from Google looks so different. I just remember that left was the way to my house and if you went straight rather than left you would be in Itaewan (I think). Can anyone assist me in getting oriented?

Re: Trying to remember Yongsan
Welcome luggage! 30 people read your post, but no answers, so here goes.
I think you are describing Gate 3, nearest to the Main Post Chapel. When you went out the gate immediately turning to the left, you went slightly down , then up a hill, without crossing the main road, is that right? Was there a grocery store or any other landmark you can recall up the hill? Or did you cross the big main road and up a hill? We need to verify that first. Do you recall any overpass or underpass of the main highway? Let me know. |

Re: Trying to remember Yongsan
I appreciate your assistance. I however may not be too much help. It has been so long. What I can vaguely remember is leaving out the gage (which I believe was to the rear (not directly) of 8 Army HQS and turning left. Then I walked to the corner, kind of a curve and walked down the hill with the big road to my right. I did cross the road near the bottom of the hill and veered off to the right up through small roads (alleys) to my house. I remember the bus stopped at the point where I begging climbing the hill to my house. I believe the area was called Yongsan Dong. But if this is not sufficient information, I do thank you in advance for your effort.

Now we have it. You went out Gate 7, turned left to the corner, down along the fence, big road on your right, to the bottom of the hill, and crossed the big road. Then half way up the hill.
Find the large Hyatt Regency Hotel at the top of that hill, on Google Earth. (It is the largest hotel in Itaewon.) There is one small road directly in front of the Hyatt Regency Hotel which leads WEST down to the big road you spoke of. That intersection is at gate 3 (Walk-in only). Your home area is between the Hotel and Gate 3. There have been no big changes in the roads in the area of your home. Good Luck. I can get you coordinates if necessary. ![]() |
