03 Yongsan housing and EFMP medical questions

Hello,
My husband was just offered Korea as an assignment arriving March/April 2009. He will be at Camp Casey. He is an 03 and will be getting a command. Our options were 18 months unaccompanied or 2 years accompanied. We have a little girl with mild Autism on EFMP. I was wondering if anyone knows of the medical resources available at the hospital or on the economy? We are desperatly trying to get Command Sponsorship. Is that difficult? How hard is the EFMP screaning process? I was told the family will be in Hannam Village. Can you tell me about housing for an 03. Is there a gate in the housing area? Is driving there difficult. I'm so happy I found this forum! Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 03 Yongsan housing and EFMP medical questions

You can go to https://onestop.army.mil/

to select an installation A-Z, Y for Yongsan, and plug in your paygrade to see what is available. It will be one of the low-rise buildings. Hannam Village is roughly a mile and a half to two miles from Main Post and South Post depending on which route you take and there is regularly scheduled shuttle service. It also has its own mini-commissary and shopette, a gym, pool, and several other amenities.

Not sure of the medical available for your needs.

Driving here is an adventure. I've lived places where driving was orderly, but like driving on a race track, other places where you "drive it like you stole it", ect. Here, it is like the population drives to be as offensive as possible. I'm glad we didn't bring a car over. Much easier to just buy a "pre-dented" hooptie. The cars tend to get better gas milage and the parts are cheaper if there is a problem.

BTW, Welcome to the Board. I'm sure the regular welcome wagon will be along shortly.

Re: 03 Yongsan housing and EFMP medical questions

Please do not cut cornors with the medical situation.

The only person who can give you the correct answer is the medical doctors. Go through the entire EFMP process to know EXACTALLY if the Dr.s here can take care of your daughter. Even though the Korean Dr.s are very advanced, the only people who can give you a decisive answer are the Dr.s on post.

Please don't take my post wrong, something's cornors can be cut, but you don't want to get here and your daughter not be able to be taken care of.

Re: 03 Yongsan housing and EFMP medical questions

I'm enrolled in EFMP and still came over, I did all the medical screening and got all of my vaccinations like they said (So did my daughter). If they had not approved us to come though, we wouldn't have. Also, If they already offered you a 2 year accompanied tour wouldn't that mean that you are already going to get command sponsored if you apply for it?

I'm moving to Hannam Village on September 1st in the Low Rises, My husband is a W01. What I've seen about Hannam, I've been very happy with! If you're husband is an Officer he should get a low rise apartment also. I'm living in Uijeongbu right now on the ecomony and my husband is stationed at Cp Stanley.. I go to Casey a lot though. There are a couple other girls here that live off post up towards Casey.

I agree with the other posts as well, very good info there.

It is my understanding that if the slots are available, the service member is advised it is, but that in the end, nothing is finalized until your health packet is signed off on by a doc and sent in and the receiving base decides they can handle the EFM. I haven't seen the list(s) for Korea, but I have seen the 2 lists for Japan; the "This will definitely keep you from going" and the "This could keep you from going" lists.

Re: 03 Yongsan housing and EFMP medical questions

Hi, Thanks for all the replies. We were told by Branch that he wouldn't know if he could take the family until after he accepted the job at Camp Casey. He would accept the job then put some paperwork in for a Command Sponsorship. Including the EFMP paperwork. So, I was just trying to see if the Medical resources we need are there before he accepts the job. I can handle 12 months unaccompanied but 18 months seems so much longer! We have done 2 OIF deployments so of course I hope the family can be together as much as possible. I was told that "key leadership" postitions get Sponsored more easily. I'm not sure if Company Command is "key" or not. For those on EFMP, how long did it take for you to find out if it went through or not? How do the lowrise buildings look in the inside? I have seen outstide pictures on the army website but they don't show interior pics. They also won't tell you the estimated wait. They say do to army turbulence, call the housing office. Does Hannam Village have a gate with a check point? Any one do a Space A flight to visit family? Was it rough? Do you like it there? Would you go again? I have tons of questions floating around my head. Thanks for taking my post!

Re: 03 Yongsan housing and EFMP medical questions

I live in the high rise, so I have no idea how the low rise looks. Yes, it is walled and gated with a check point. There is a bus stop (for Korean public transportation) and a taxi stand less than 50 yards or so out the front gate. It isn't that far to the nearest subway station.

Right now is PCS season. I was 17 days behind DH coming over (in February) due to them waiting until the last minute to process his orders, so I had to stay to wait on the movers. He moved in 5 days before I got here. I've got a friend who just came over at the very end of June. They had to stay at DHL for 3 weeks and they are on South Post.

I think everyone has days when they question why they came over. Home for me is where DH is at.

None of us can really tell you what the hospital and educational system here is set up to handle, especially when it comes to special needs children.

Re: 03 Yongsan housing and EFMP medical questions

We applied for CS back in the states. We found out almost a year before him actually going, he had to go to school too before he came over for his promotion. We knew the EFMP screening got approved pretty soon afterwards, it didn't take long, but that was only one of the things that had to get approved.

From What I understand getting approved for one while he's already over here seems to move quicker, however don't quote me on that.

Here's a few interior pictures of the lowrises..

Here is a member's pictures (Navgirl) of her home in Hannam Village.. it too is a low rise:

You can also go to http://www.kohomm.org for more information on the housing on Yongsan..
