Re: Yongsan Housing questions

It was short lived. last summer there was a mecury scare but it turned out to be nothing. They are installing new water filtration systems at each building. Our's is being done as I type and it's quite noisy but worth it. Also the water tanks are cleaned out regularly so the water is not bad at all.

Oh and about the big move, the last I heard was 2012. Originally is was 2007 and it's done and gone.

Cool Re: Pyongtaek

Humphreys Army Garrison is located adjoining Pyongtaek City, in Pyongtaek Kun. A Kun is like a county, sort of, as South Korea is about the size of Indiana.
We recently went down to see the progress of the massive earth moving project which is required in order to build the post of our dreams on top of 3000 years of "night soil". The rice paddies surrounding the present post are like a giant swamp, which was flooded every year to grow rice. The project, under way and supposedly paid for by the Korean government, is charged with raising many square miles of land some six meters (over 19 feet)! Really big trucks have been dumping dirt from somewhere for over a year now, and to look at the huge area, it would take a real stretch of the imagination to believe that they can do it in 4 years. Then, will it be solid enough to build on?
Soon construction on the present inhabitable area will be filled up. There is no way, in my humble opinion, (with some building construction experience), will the dream area be ready for occupancy in 2012. Timetable and Korean government action will have to slip. Knowledgeable others agree with me.
I predict a change in schedule and also a change in politics, which may not stop the move completely, but certainly extend the timetable. I have no insider information, nor am I involved in any way with this project. My predictions are based purely on personal observations of how things work during my many years in Korea. No large numbers of people are going to move until the infrastructure is in place to support them!

Re: Yongsan Housing questions

I hear ya Mr. Joe. I remember seeing a map of the proposed area on one of the army.mil sites' news releases. It looked like it was bordered by a river. So, it's good they're raising the elevation, or they may have had to deal with possible floods too.

Yeah, just like with any big plan, it's usually delayed.

The more I think about this, the more it sense it makes. Being that I'm AF, and the small amount of personnel we have on Yongsan, we would probably be moved to Osan since it's pretty close to Humphreys.

I remember reading about the mercury problem in the news.

JUST found out this morning that my concurrent travel is approved if I agree to live off base. Which, we do agree! The housing office noted that the wait would be 140+ days for on base housing. We'll probably find a nicer, more likable place off base anyway.

Re: Yongsan Housing questions

When you search for a place in Seoul, ignore the Hannam Tower beside Hannam Village. It is a "sick building". People used to live there said there has serious Mold and air veneration problem. Several people got very sick when living there. So don't be fooled by its pretty lobby, gym, and swimming pool.
